The Chemistry Section gives a series of introductory courses for PhD students at the Chemistry Section every year. The courses are also open to post docs, subject to availability.

1. Teaching chemistry  (2 hp, code KZ41DKE)

The course is designed for PhD students in Chemistry with little or no experience of teaching, and is focused at teaching assignments as assistants leading labs and exercises. It is compulsory for all PhD students at the Chemistry section, as well as PhD students in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at ACES.

2. Philosophy of science and ethics (3 hp, code KZ42DKE)

The course contains lectures by invited speakers, group discussions and written assignments.

 It is compulsory for all PhD students at the Chemistry section*. This course, or the equivalent given by the Section for Earth and Environmental Science, is also compulsory for PhD students in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at ACES.

* for PhD students in Organic chemistry admitted from 170701.

3A. Writing science (3 hp, code KZ43DKE )

For PhD students in Biochemistry/Biophysics

The course contains lectures and practical exercises in writing and rewriting scientific text, with individual feedback on strengths and weaknesses in the participant’s own writing. The course is compulsory for PhD students at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Requirements for admission to the course

1. You have to have been accepted before April 1st 2018 (for PhD students in Neurochemistry) or to have your project plan approved (for Biochemistry, Biophysics and Bioinformatics PhD students).

2. The course writing assignment is obligatory and must be submitted 10 days before the course begins. Assignment: write a three-page grant application concerning your project, alternatively a fictitious project. This will later be followed by evaluation of each other's applications.

3B. Writing science (3 hp, code KZ43DKE)

For PhD students in Organic Chemistry or at MMK

The course contains lectures on scientific writing in English, and exercises on manuscript writing. It is compulsory for PhD students at the Departments of Organic Chemistry* and MMK, as well as PhD students in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at ACES.

Writing science (MMK, OC, ACES): mid May

Course book: Joseph E. Harmon “The craft of scientific communication” This book will be handed out at the introduction meeting.

The texts to be handed in shall be uploaded by the students in Mondo.

This course contains a seminar, presentations, discussions, and a Poster session. It is compulsory for PhD students at MMK, DBB*, and for PhD students in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at ACES.
